Visiting Spain just before the summer rush is an ideal way to experience its culture, cuisine, and warmth without the crowds. Our late-May journey took us through Madrid, Granada, and Málaga, and each stop revealed a different facet of Spain’s charm.
We began in Madrid, staying at the Four Seasons Hotel Madrid, which was exceptional. The hotel’s elegant lobby provided a calm refuge from the city’s pace, while every meal and cocktail was perfectly executed. The central location made exploring easy, and the staff—especially the porters—were always ready to help with directions, taxis, and local recommendations.
During our stay, we explored the Museo del Prado on a guided tour with Context Travel, which helped us focus on the highlights while gaining fascinating historical insight. We also visited the Museo Reina Sofía, home to Picasso’s Guernica, one of the most powerful works of modern art, and toured the majestic Royal Palace, whose opulent rooms tell the story of Spain’s royal heritage. Madrid is full of delightful discoveries, from La Oficial Ceramic Shop and the charming Late & Late Chocolate Shop near the hotel, to the multi-level El Corte Inglés department store where you can find everything from luxury goods to gourmet food halls.
From Madrid, we traveled by train south to Granada to see the Alhambra, the city’s crown jewel. Our local guide offered deep insight into the Islamic influence that shaped Granada’s architecture, art, and identity. We stayed at the Palacio Gran Vía, A Royal Hideaway Hotel, part of the Barceló collection. The property, housed in a beautifully restored palace, features a stunning rooftop terrace with a bar and exceptional views. One of our favorite meals in Spain was at María de la O, a restaurant set in a 19th-century mansion where Chef Chechu González crafts modern Andalusian cuisine using seasonal ingredients and house-made vinegars that bring an elegant acidity to each dish.
If you visit Granada in June, the city celebrates its Feria del Corpus Christi, a lively festival filled with traditional music, flamenco dancing, local foods, and colorful rides for children. It’s a joyful time that reflects the city’s vibrant community spirit and Andalusian pride.
Our final stop was Málaga, a relaxed and sun-kissed coastal city. We enjoyed leisurely walks through its old town, stocked up on Spanish wines at El Templo del Vino, and ended our trip with a memorable dinner in La Malagueta, a seaside district known for its lively restaurants serving fresh seafood and Mediterranean flavors.
Spain before the high season offers the best of both worlds: warm weather, vibrant cities, and a sense of space that lets you truly savor each moment.
