Florence, Italy, in December

There’s something timeless about Florence, but visiting during the Christmas season adds a layer of magic that’s hard to describe. For seven days, the city glowed with festive lights, the smell of roasted chestnuts filled the air, and the rhythm of life felt both elegant and unhurried.

We stayed at the Hotel Baglioni, an elegant property that combines classic Florentine charm with modern comfort. The rooms are spacious and beautifully decorated, the staff are gracious and responsive, and housekeeping is meticulous. Every request was handled promptly and always with a smile. The location is ideal, close enough to walk to Florence’s landmarks, yet far enough from the most crowded areas to offer a peaceful retreat.

Florence invites you to explore on foot. Around every corner, there’s something to admire: centuries-old churches, intimate piazzas, artisan boutiques, and lively cafés. We spent hours wandering through the Uffizi Gallery, home to some of the most important works of the Renaissance, and joined a guided tour of the Duomo Cathedral, where we visited the remarkable underground ruins dating to 405 CE. The Basilica di Santa Croce, another highlight, houses the tombs of luminaries like Michelangelo, Galileo, and Machiavelli.

A particularly fun and fascinating stop was the Leonardo da Vinci Museum, a small but captivating space filled with interactive replicas of the inventor’s ingenious machines. It’s a hands-on experience that delights both adults and children, offering a playful glimpse into the mind of one of history’s greatest thinkers.

Beyond its art and architecture, Florence is a feast for the senses. We discovered La Casa della Stampa, a charming print shop that preserves the city’s artisanal traditions with hand-pressed prints, woodcut designs, and maps created using centuries-old techniques. The Mercato Centrale is another must-visit, buzzing with vendors offering everything from fresh pasta to truffle delicacies. The café culture here is irresistible, and even the simplest espresso feels special when enjoyed in a centuries-old setting.

Food lovers will find Florence endlessly rewarding. The city offers everything from casual trattorias to Michelin-starred experiences. One of our most memorable meals was at Il Palagio, the signature restaurant at the Four Seasons Florence, where we enjoyed one of the best Beef Wellingtons we’ve ever tasted. Florence also takes gelato seriously; you’ll find artisanal gelaterias at nearly every turn, each competing to win the hearts of the most discerning gelato connoisseurs.

Florence at Christmas captures everything that makes Italy extraordinary: beauty, craftsmanship, warmth, and a deep sense of place. Whether it’s your first visit or your tenth, it has a way of making you fall in love all over again.
