Few experiences rival spending the holiday season in the Italian Alps, wrapped in warmth, surrounded by mountain grandeur, and with world-class skiing just steps away. If that’s the kind of winter you’re dreaming of, Cervinia deserves a place at the top of your list.
Nestled on the Italian side of the Matterhorn and bordering Switzerland, Cervinia is a destination that rewards travelers who value both beauty and substance. The resort town is charming, the skiing is extensive, and the food scene, on and off the mountain, is genuinely impressive.
Our home for the trip was the Hotel Hermitage, a fifth-generation, family-run property that is part of both the Virtuoso and Relais & Châteaux networks and a consistent presence in the Michelin hotel guide. From the moment you step into its lobby, complete with a wood-burning fireplace, fine art, and wraparound mountain views, it feels less like checking in and more like arriving somewhere that was expecting you. During the holiday season, each room features its own decorated tree, and the warm, alpine chalet aesthetic runs throughout. Service is professional and discreet, never intrusive.
Breakfast is abundant and beautifully spread, with fresh pastries, eggs to order, and excellent coffee. Dinner at La Chandelle, the hotel’s main restaurant and Gambero Rosso recipient, focuses on the traditional cuisines of Piedmont and the Aosta Valley, with a nightly selection of grilled meats, fish, and poultry made to order. The sommelier, Simone Grange, is a trusted guide through a well-curated cellar.

On the slopes, Cervinia is particularly well-suited for beginner and intermediate skiers, with roughly 85% of terrain falling into those categories. The scenery is breathtaking throughout, and dining options on the mountain, from fusion at Chalet Etoile to traditional Aostan fare at Ristorante Hotel Baita Cretaz, are well above average. In town, standouts include Wood, a Michelin-recognized restaurant blending Italian, Swiss, and Asian cuisine, and Metzelet Alpine Dining, known for its excellent fondue. Reservations are strongly recommended across the board, especially during peak season.

One of the true highlights of our trip was the Matterhorn Alpine Crossing, the highest border crossing of the Alps by cable car, connecting Cervinia on the Italian side to Zermatt in Switzerland at roughly 3,500 meters above sea level. The full journey takes approximately 90 minutes and passes through a series of stations, each more dramatic than the last. The infrastructure is remarkable. The crown jewel of the experience is the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise station, the highest mountain station in Europe, where a viewing platform puts 38 four-thousand-metre peaks and 14 glaciers across three countries within sight simultaneously. The altitude is noticeable, breathtaking in every sense of the word. Beyond the views, the summit also houses a restaurant serving classic Swiss fare, a cinema lounge, and a glacier palace carved into the ice itself. Named one of Time magazine’s World’s Greatest Places of 2024, this is not a side trip to simply check off. It’s a genuine highlight, and one well worth building your itinerary around.

A holiday ski escape like this is not exclusive to Europe. The American Rockies, from Vail and Aspen to Park City, offer their own version of this magic, with world-class skiing, luxury lodging, and festive atmosphere. Wherever the destination, the ingredients for an unforgettable holiday week are the same: the right place, the right property, and the right planning.
