For our New Year’s getaway, my wife and I chose to escape to northern Italy, to the alpine beauty of Avelengo and Merano in South Tyrol. This region, nestled between Italian and Austrian cultures, blends mountain elegance with Mediterranean warmth, making it one of Europe’s most captivating winter destinations.
Our home base for the week was the Miramonti Boutique Hotel, a true alpine sanctuary perched above Merano. From the moment we arrived, it was clear that this property is something special. The design is refined yet deeply connected to nature, with sleek lines, warm wood tones, and panoramic views of the valley and Dolomites. Every detail, from the comfort of the rooms to the exceptional housekeeping and exquisite dining, reflects thoughtful craftsmanship.
Breakfast here is a highlight: abundant, local, and beautifully presented. Dinners feel both intimate and elevated. After a day on the slopes, there’s nothing more indulgent than slipping into the hotel’s heated outdoor onsen-style pool, surrounded by snow-dusted pines and mountain views that stretch for miles. The service throughout is warm and genuine, and the staff make every effort to ensure your stay is seamless.
From the hotel, it’s an easy drive to Meran 2000 Ski Area, which offers a solid mix of beginner and intermediate terrain. Conditions during our stay in late December were on the icy side, but the views and efficiency of the lifts made up for it. Those seeking more challenging runs can also reach other renowned resorts within an hour’s drive or so.
Beyond skiing, Merano is enchanting in winter. The town’s Christmas Market is one of Italy’s most charming, complete with Alpine chalets, mulled wine, and local artisans. The area also offers excellent gastronomy, from cozy mountain huts to Michelin-level dining. One standout is Miil, in nearby Cermes, which showcases creative regional cuisine in a beautiful setting.
Merano is also one of Europe’s great spa towns. Wellness has been part of its identity since the 19th century, when travelers first came for its thermal waters and clean alpine air. Today, that legacy continues at two world-class destinations: Terme Merano, a striking modern complex in the heart of town with more than two dozen pools, saunas, and treatments using regional ingredients; and Palace Merano, a grand Belle Époque hotel renowned for its holistic wellness programs.
At Snow & Sand Vacations, we can design custom itineraries that combine ski, culture, and wellness, including visits or extended stays at these exceptional properties. Whether you’re looking for a few restorative spa days after the slopes or a full wellness retreat, Merano offers the perfect setting to recharge in style.
While Merano is accessible by public transportation, renting a car is highly recommended for flexibility, especially if you plan to explore the neighboring valleys and villages at your own pace.
This part of South Tyrol perfectly captures the best of both worlds: Italian hospitality and Austrian alpine precision. It delivers a winter experience that feels both sophisticated and soulful. We left already planning our return.
